Book: This is your Brain on Sports
What: Brainspotting evolved from eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and was developed by David Grand, PhD. Brainspotting is a leap forward in psychological care. It combines talk and brain-based therapy into a powerful focused treatment method. Dr. Grand explains, “Brainspotting allows us to harness the brain’s natural ability for self-scanning so we can activate, locate, and process the sources of trauma and distress in the body.” In a clinical healing relationship Brainspotting is able to identify and release subconscious blocks to healing in a deep, powerful and focused way.
When: Brainspotting can be used to treat a variety of disorders including performance anxiety, physical pain, depression, addiction, post concussive syndrome, MTBI, and much more. It can be used with athletes, performers, and those who desire a fast and effective way to overcome mental, physical and emotional obstacles. For example, Brainspotting was found to be the most effective therapeutic intervention for adults in addressing trauma resulting from the the Newtown-Sandy Hook, Connecticut tragedy (nsfch.org).
How: Brainspotting works through neurobiological processes releasing the core sources of emotional/body trauma. It is theorized that there is activation of the superior caliculus of the brain, thus allowing for rapid trauma resolution. It is enhanced with the use of Biolateral sound to stimulate and then release deep sources of distress, trauma and anxiety.
